You can edit an M3U playlist in any plain-text editor, because each channel is just two lines of text. For larger lists, a dedicated playlist editor makes reordering easier. Before you start, check whether your player's favorites and category settings can do the job instead, because an edited copy stops receiving your provider's lineup updates.
Try your player first
Most IPTV players let you hide categories, reorder groups and build a favorites list without touching the playlist. That keeps the original URL, so new channels and fixes from your provider still arrive automatically. Editing the file makes most sense when your player can't do this.
Editing by hand
- Download the playlist from its URL and save it as a
.m3ufile. - Open it in a plain-text editor such as Notepad (Windows), TextEdit in plain-text mode (Mac) or any code editor. Don't use a word processor.
- To remove a channel, delete its
#EXTINFline and the stream line beneath it. - To reorder, move both lines together.
- To rename, change the text after the last comma on the
#EXTINFline. - To change the category, edit the
group-titlevalue. - Keep
#EXTM3Uas the very first line, and save in UTF-8 encoding.
What not to change
- Stream URLs: editing these breaks the channel.
tvg-idvalues: these link channels to the TV guide. Change them and the guide disappears for that channel. See EPG troubleshooting.- Credentials in URLs: if you share an edited file, remember it still contains your login.
Using a playlist editor
Desktop and web-based M3U editors let you drag channels, bulk-remove groups and export a new file. Prefer offline desktop tools: web-based editors require uploading a playlist that contains your credentials to someone else's server.
Loading your edited playlist
Players that accept a local file can load the edited .m3u directly. Players that only accept URLs need the file hosted somewhere, which exposes your credentials, so in that case stick with in-player favorites instead.
