Free and Open-Source IPTV Player Software Compared

Updated 1 min read

A desktop computer on a tidy desk

Several excellent IPTV players are completely free and open source: VLC for quick playback, Kodi for a full TV interface, Hypnotix on Linux, and IPTVnator on Windows, macOS and Linux. None of them includes channels. They play the playlist or login from a service you subscribe to.

The options

  • VLC media player: free and open source from the VideoLAN project; runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Opens M3U playlists instantly but has no TV-guide grid. See opening an M3U in VLC.
  • Kodi: a free, open-source media center. With the official PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, it shows live channels with a full guide.
  • Hypnotix: a free IPTV player from the Linux Mint team (GPLv3) supporting M3U playlists and the Xtream API, with live TV, movies and series. It ships with a default free-channel provider you can remove.
  • IPTVnator: an open-source (MIT-licensed) player for macOS, Windows and Linux supporting M3U/M3U8 playlists, Xtream Codes and Stalker/Ministra portals, with XMLTV guide support in the desktop app.

Which should you choose?

  • Testing a playlist or occasional viewing: VLC.
  • Living-room PC or Raspberry Pi: Kodi. See IPTV on a Raspberry Pi.
  • Linux desktop with an Xtream login: Hypnotix.
  • Desktop app with a guide and portal support: IPTVnator.

“Free” players with catches

  • Ads and upsells: many free player apps show ads or lock features behind a paid tier. That's fine if it's clear upfront.
  • Bundled channels: an app that comes preloaded with channels isn't just a player. Check whether those channels are licensed.
  • Unofficial downloads: get players from official stores or the project's own website, never “cracked” or repackaged installers.

Open-source projects publish their code, so you can see exactly what the software does. That's a useful reassurance for an app that stores your login.
