An IPTV portal URL is the address of a provider's middleware: the server-side system that delivers the channel menu, guide and on-demand library to a set-top box or app. Instead of loading a playlist, the device connects to the portal, which recognizes it (often by MAC address) and serves the account's content.
Portal vs. playlist vs. Xtream login
- M3U playlist: a list of channels your player downloads. See What is an M3U file?.
- Xtream Codes login: a server URL, username and password your player uses to request channels. See setting up an Xtream Codes login.
- Portal: a full middleware service that drives the device's menus; the provider controls what you see.
Middleware and “Stalker” portals
Middleware platforms manage subscribers, packages and content for TV operators. A widely used example is Infomir's Ministra TV platform, which supports Infomir's MAG series of set-top boxes. Player apps often group these as “Stalker/Ministra” portals, which is why you'll see both names in settings menus.
Devices and apps that use portals
- MAG set-top boxes, which are designed around portal connections.
- Some IPTV player apps, such as the open-source IPTVnator, which lists support for Stalker/Ministra portals alongside M3U and Xtream.
- Emulator apps that imitate a set-top box on Android devices.
Why your MAC address matters
Many portals authorize devices by MAC address: the provider registers your device's MAC, and only that device can open the portal. If you replace the device, the provider must register the new one. Because the MAC effectively acts as a credential here, don't post it publicly.
Changing the portal URL
On portal-based devices, the URL is entered in the system or server settings; the exact menu depends on the device and firmware. After changing it, restart the device so it connects to the new portal. Only use portal addresses issued to you by your own provider.
